There are two poems that inspired the piece. One is a poem by Robert Graves, The White Goddess. Much like the Mother Goddess, represented by the phases of the Moon and its hope on fertility, love, and death. Another is Quiet Night Thoughts by Chinese poet, Li Bai. The moon here triggered the longing for home. In the poem, he wrote: "Up towards the glorious moon I raised my head, then lay me down — and thoughts of home arose." Both represent the situations that the artist is undertaking, being a mother and relocating as an immigrant.
